Since ISIS gained control of large chunks of land in Iraq we have witnessed reprehensible crimes against humanity take place.
The most recently issued fatwa from ISIS has the following stipulation:
All girls and women aged between 11 and 46 living in Mosul will undergo female genital mutilation
The decree has been issued and is likely to affect around four million girls and women. This is the beginning since we are only talking about Mosul here.
Depending on the advances of ISIS will depend on how many further women are at risk from being savagely mutilated by those thugs called ISIS.
My opinion is that this could potentially backfire on ISIS since this is something very new for Iraq and make no mistake ISIS are powerful so long as the tribal leaders feel they have a chance of running the government in the event of a Maliki downfall.
If we are to see a rebellion against ISIS by tribal leaders which ensues many thousands of members from within the tribes that cover the vast tracts of land that make up the area of Mosul in the Nineveh province then perhaps we will start to see the tide turn.
I am somewhat optimistic that ISIS will lose the stronghold they already have but at the same time I am prepared for the worst.
Prepared for the worst?
I say prepared for the worst… but what is the worst? Surely female genital mutilation on a mass scale is the worst? or the current witch-hunt on anyone who is a follower of a belief different to your own?
My question is, where does this end?
We will surely now see the horror pictures that ISIS will promote as propaganda to instil fear in those tasked with booting them firmly from Iraq.
In case you are wondering, what is female genital mutilation? I had to double check myself since it is something I have heard of but never imagined would reach so close to Iraq.
Female Genital Mutilation is also known as female genital cutting and female circumcision! It is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as “all procedures that involve partial or total removal of the external female genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons.”
This is quite simply, 100 steps backwards for Iraq if this happens. For millions of girls who are already scared from years of torment things are about to get very personal.
I am hopeful such evil will be halted.
